My instinctive eye for detail, and the possible creative inspirations that constantly presented themselves on a daily basis meant that a creative vocation was the natural choice for me. Developing a passion for painting through the encouragement, guidance and mentoring of some well-known artists over a number of years enabled me to find the fulfilment and sense of freedom I was searching for.
Always drawn to organic textures, colours and shapes that exude a natural palette, but also possess uncluttered, clean simple lines, has continuously influenced my paintings. Whether it’s with my abstract work where I incorporate these elements to convey something in a more fluid and loose style, or my other works where we find ourselves taking in a more recognisable image, I find these influences are constantly present.
With my realist oils my intension is to encourage others to notice the beauty that surrounds them. I find myself magnifying the scale, which in turn demands a physical interaction with the painting, with moments of working intimately with the surface, broken by moments of assessing the progress from a distance, making the larger than life images hard to ignore.
This all takes place in my studio which is surrounded by nature. I love the solitude this space offers me. The stillness and calm, often in direct contrast to my constantly creative mind, enables me to relax into my work where time becomes irrelevant and my day begins.

This impact is evident with her recent body of work where we find her employing traditional methods and techniques using high quality oil paints, meticulously applied in a very controlled and precise manner, layering opaque and transparent glazes over a period of weeks and months to produce her studies in commonplace objects which could be described easily as ‘modern classics’.
Her inspiration for these paintings were influenced by her instinctive eye for detail and the beauty that surrounds all of us in the ‘everyday’, that so often goes unnoticed. Capturing the moment with photography using either her portrait or macro lens Mardi found she could focus on the detail she wanted to enhance whilst ensuring the composition was contemporary with clean simple lines. By magnifying these details and tonal subtleties she has impressively transitioned the scale through her painting on to the canvas.
Mardi loves being surrounded by nature and the solitude she finds in her art studio located in a leafy outer suburb of Melbourne. The stillness and calm enables her to connect profoundly with her creative flow. You can view more of her work at www.mardibusby.com or follow her in the studio at www.facebook.com/MardiBusbyArtist |
