ABOUT THE ARTIST
Liz Fitzgerald's background is in graphic design and visual arts education. She returned to painting, a past love, 6 years ago.
Her artworks are generally a recreation of a place or space. This may be remembered or imaginary – the feeling, more than the physical. Her interpretations vary between the real and apparent and the abstracted and reconstructed using colour and shape as the primary elements.
For Liz, painting is a process of revelation, of addition and subtraction. It's an expression of natural contrasts: light and shade, large and small, chaos and calm. She feels the process is a continuous balance between considered mark-making and not overthinking things too much - it's important to remain playful and keep it light.
Liz finds painting is an immersive experience. Sometimes she might have a plan, but more often it is the emergence and discovery of something unknown. Liz compares it to the experience of driving and suddenly finding yourself at your destination without being able to recall the journey. It’s both liberating and confounding!
